15 INSIDER SECRETS TO BE A SUCESSFUL MODEL

“Modeling, it’s being an artist as well. It’s just being a silent artist. It takes a lot of self-control and a lot of discipline”

- Jessica White Tweet

You’re thinking about becoming a model right?. If you are, the odds are that you are already discouraged even before starting out. You probably think that the modeling market is already saturated, and that there is no space for a newcomer like you.

Or perhaps you have already done one type of modeling or another, but have yet to achieve the kind of professional success you’d like. In all likelihood, you believe that success, as a model will be hard to achieve and have resigned yourself to scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The truth of the matter is that the modeling world has never been this easy to conquer, and there are plenty of opportunities to be had for the tenacious model who will not allow a few challenges to act as a deterrent to achieving professional success. The truth is that you can make it as a professional model. All you need is to gain access to insider modeling industry secrets you might not have had.

SECRET 1 : ANYONE CAN BE A MODEL

You need to know that practically anyone and everyone can become a model today. The long-held barriers to entering the modeling industry have been challenged over the years and are virtually non-existent today.

A popular myth about the modeling profession is that you have to be tall to be a model. Well, that myth has been debunked. You don’t have to be tall. While there are certain height requirements for runway and editorial models, there is a tremendous amount of work available for models that are shorter than 5’7. The most popular example of a not- so-tall but wildly successful supermodel is Kate Moss. She was one of the first to break the height barrier at 5’6. Male models like Aaron Frew at 5 ‘7 are also today making good money as a model for Calvin Klein.

You also don’t have to be skinny to be a professional model. The profession is now open to people of various sizes, from skinny to “real” sizes, to plus sizes. Over the last decade, the plus size modeling market has become one of the fastest growing and most important sectors of the fashion industry. An example of a plus size model is Ashley Graham (Ford Models).

Thirdly, there is no more age barrier to modeling. You don’t have to be very young to break into the industry. The demand for models who represent a variety of age categories has also become an important part of the modeling industry. We now have women making their debut professional modeling career at age 60/70.

SECRET 2 : DETERMINE WHAT KIND OF MODEL YOU WANT TO BE

Some newbies get into the modeling profession with the thought that they can do it all. The truth is that modeling is just like any other multi-faceted profession, and it is better to specialize as early as possible. Here are some of the areas for you to consider specializing in:

  1. High fashion/runway modeling
  2. Commercial and print modeling
  3. Editorial modeling
  4. Catalogue modeling
  5. Fitness modeling
  6. Cosmetic modeling
  7. Swimsuit and underwear modeling
  8. Showroom modeling
  9. Fit modeling
  10. Nude modeling
  11. Body part modeling

The most popular and seemingly lucrative of these kinds of modeling are high fashion, editorial, commercial and runway modeling. You need to know however that a lot of models who have found success doing high fashion, editorial and runway modeling mostly began as commercial, showroom and fit modeling.

SECRET 3 : HOW TO BECOME A COMMERCIAL MODEL

This is one aspect of the modeling industry that is extremely easy to break into. Commercial models are basically models that look like you and your next-door neighbor. They are everyday people modeling and advertising products such as household items, food, sporting equipment, pharmaceuticals, travel destinations, and more.

One fundamental advantage is that unlike fashion models who must have specific measurements, commercial models can be any shape, age, height, and size. The income that a commercial model earns can vary depending on the type of job, the market in which the client or model is based, and the model’s level of experience. Commercial models can generally expect to earn around $300 per hour for the amount of time they are on set. Buyout fees range from between $500 to tens of thousands of dollars.

To find good work as a commercial model, you need to have an agency representing you. To get hired by an agency, you need to submit your pictures to modeling agents and scouts. You can just send snapshots, but remember these are busy people and it’s hard to get a second chance, so you have to make sure that you send images which will make you irresistible. You need a specialist fashion photographer to help you, who can evaluate your particular look and determine what would work best for you and accordingly help you build an irresistible portfolio. This photographer can also help you get to the legit agencies and scouts.

Put a little effort into your photos; let your personality shine through. Your portfolio has to be planned, and should have a good range of pictures to show your strength in posing and expressions. Every portfolio is different and unique and should be built as per your looks.

Commercial models should also be good actors. For that matter you should work on your expressions and posing. One very effective exercise you should do daily is to spend about 30 minutes in front of a mirror and practice your posing and expressions. Start by gathering a few images digitally or print of some models or celebrities and imitate it. Get in the position and study the expression and do it yourself

SECRET 4 : HOW TO BECOME AN EDITORIAL MODEL

Sometimes, people confuse editorial models with commercial models. The easiest way to distinguish between both however is the height of the model. Editorial fashion models are usually tall (most times 5’9″ minimum) and uniquely attractive. Most editorial models are scouted young at age 16 or 17 years old and enter the market as fresh new faces.

Another difference between a commercial and editorial model is that as a commercial model, you might not build a name, but as an editorial model, you surely will.

SECRET 5 : HOW TO BECOME A HIGH FASHION MODEL

High fashion models work in the fast paced, always changing, lucrative modeling genre of high fashion. They usually make a lot of money doing what they do, travel internationally, and most times model as their full-time job. This is what every model usually aspires to be. They usually have specific measurements, looks, and personalities. So what makes a high fashion model? They must fit into extremely strict measurement standards that the majority of people in the world don’t. For example, they are expected to be tall and slender without being awkward or gangly-looking. They also must photograph extremely well. As a fashion model, you have to have a good runway walk, as high fashion models perform a lot on the runway.

The best characteristic to have as a fashion model is to have a unique look that differentiates you from others. You have to be able to bring something new to the table. And it goes without saying that you should also get a good agent or modeling agency to represent you and help you break into the industry. While doing your portfolio ask your photographer to do agency required images and include a wardrobe stylist in the shoot.

SECRET 6 : HOW TO BECOME A CATALOGUE MODEL

Simply put, catalog models are models who pose for catalogs. They are those people you see when you look through clothing catalogs. Catalog models come in all different shapes and sizes, and the only factor they have in common is good health. In the past, the catalog model appeared only in the print catalogs of clothing and product retailers. The advent of the internet has now made it easy for you to be in demand as a catalog model. Often you will be photographed to promote a product that only appears online. To enhance your opportunities as a catalog model, you need to look healthy, have great hair and a fantastic smile.

SECRET 7 : HOW TO BECOME A SWIMSUIT, UNDERWEAR OR LINGERIE MODEL

These models are amongst the most visible in the industry. While thought to always be provocative and sexy, this may not be the case. Sometimes, lingerie modeling may just be to shoot a close up of a box of underwear or a bra. As you know, lingerie and swimsuit modeling is not for everyone and this kind of business runs slightly differently than other types of modeling.

For swimsuit modeling, you will have to have a sexy, healthy body, because your primary job is to show it off. You will probably be given separate training for this modeling type. You will need to learn some different things that a normal fashion model would not need to worry about. For example, certain ways to stand, walk, hold yourself, pose and play to the camera are fairly different with lingerie and swimsuit modeling.

To model lingerie, you need to have a good size bust and posterior. You cannot be too athletic or skinny because you will not fill out the underwear correctly. Lingerie and swimsuit models are usually chosen for their well-proportioned bodies.

As with other classes of modeling, you will need an agent to make a proper success of yourself.

SECRET 8 : HOW TO BECOME A NUDE MODEL

So you have no qualms about being in the buff? You have a great body and want to make a name for yourself in the nude modeling market?
As with swimwear modeling, you major asset will be a great sexy-looking, well proportioned body, as well as a great face

SECRET 9 : HOW TO BECOME A FITNESS MODEL

Once a designer has their collection ready, they need to and will hire showroom models to present the designs to buyers, and department stores and special clients. A showroom model just doesn’t model the garment. Sometimes, they are required to talk about what they are wearing. This means such models must be smart, outgoing and have an engaging smile. Showroom modeling can be conducted inside a department store, retail store, designer’s office, or in a convention setting.

To succeed as a showroom model, you need to have a great personality. You will need to be engaging and relatable.

SECRET 10 : HOW TO BECOME A SHOWROOM MODEL

As the name implies, fitness models are models that promote a healthy lifestyle and/or sell fitness services and/or equipment.

Fitness models spend a substantial amount of time devoted to eating healthy and staying in shape. Though you do need to be hundred percent committed to fitness, you don’t necessarily have to be a star athlete to follow this rewarding career. All you will need is emphasis on staying healthy and fit.

To be one, you must have an athletic build with toned muscles and very little body fat. Some female models are bulkier than others; it’s your choice. To keep fit, join a gym and combine cardio and strength-training exercises. It helps to get a personal trainer to help you stay in shape. Eat clean foods, and avoid drinking alcohol.

To get professional modeling jobs, there is a need for you to be represented by a professional agent in the field, to help match you with the right jobs.

SECRET 11 : HOW TO BECOME A FIT MODEL

A fit model is a person who is used by a fashion designer or clothing manufacturer to check the fit, drape and visual appearance of a design on a real human being. Fit models simply act as a live mannequin. To become a fit model, you must fit the criteria matching the desired measurement specifications of the designer or manufacturer. These specifications generally consist of height, bust-waist-hip circumference, arm and leg length, and shoulder width, and or any other measurement as indicated by the garment type.

Fit modeling is typically a part time job models do for a friend who has a clothing line. However, some fit models find work by posting on craigslist, or by signing on with an agency that provides these services to manufacturers.

This is a side of modeling that is not as glamorous as the others. Most fit models do this because of the pay involved, not because it is a lifelong career dream.

SECRET 12 : HOW TO BECOME A COSMETIC MODEL

As the name implies, cosmetic models are models that advertise cosmetics. Cosmetic and makeup modeling is a perfect way to gain experience, network with makeup artists and photographers, to make some money and to build your portfolio. Cosmetic modeling encompasses skincare lines as well as makeup

To become a successful cosmetic model, you must have a fresh, flawless face, as this is the building block that your employers will build on. Take care of your skin as a matter of necessity. You also must be able to wear makeup well without looking outrageous or Outlandish.

One great thing about modeling cosmetics is that the height requirements don’t usually apply.

SECRET 13 : HOW TO BECOME A BODY PART MODEL

Being a body parts model may seem a very strange profession to have, but many models make a lot of money just by modeling parts of their bodies that have special qualities. Sometimes, successful commercial or fashion models do not necessarily have nice enough specific features to have a close up of their hands or feet/shoes, even those who look great in a full length picture modeling an outfit. This is where the parts model comes in. They are employed because they usually specialize in modeling one part of the body. These types of models are usually used in photographic shoots to help sell and promote products or in films where the directors or producers are looking specifically for a particular feature.

The major types of body part models are hand models, foot models, leg models, as well as ears, hair, bottoms, necks, eyes and lips models. To become a hand model, you must have smooth skin, long slender graceful looking hands and fingers, the ability to pose your hands so they look relaxed, no blemishes or uneven skin tone, and neat and even nails. Men’s hands shouldn’t be too hairy. For foot models, requirements include smooth skin, evenly shaped toes, attractive ankles, no corns and hangnails, no blemishes or uneven skin tone, and neat and even nails. Foot models typically advertise shoes, ankle bracelets, toe rings, creams, sprays, polishes, socks etc.

Legs models are normally associated with tall models. The legs should look long, shapely, smooth, be well moisturized, waxed and free of blemishes and varicose veins. Leg models sell lots of products such as stockings, razors, bath products and lotions.

SECRET 15 : SOME UNUSUAL MODELS

Are you interested in becoming a professional superstar model? Here are further tips for you to take note of.

  1. Now that you have figured out what type of modeling you want to do, search for an agency that specializes in that field. It makes sense to search for an agency that’s local to your area, but it’s imperative to remember to research an agency first.
  2. Next, take photos. You need to take the right kind of photographs. You have to make an initial contact after you have researched the right agencies for the field you are interested in. A lot of agencies have online forms where aspiring models can send in photos and stats. Simple headshot and full-length shot digital photos are what most agencies require. Wear a simple tank top and pants and no makeup. Take the photo in natural light so that your features are easily visible. You will usually get a response within a month. Some agencies will do open calls, where they will see aspiring models from the street. When you go to one of these, take along your digitals or past professional work. Once again, keep your styling minimal.
  3. Memorize your body measurements, including chest size, hip, and waist. These are like your degrees and qualifications and should never be forgotten. These are statistics you should be able to recite even in your dreams.
  4. Maintain your appearance. Always take care to look healthy and well-groomed. As a model, what you wear and how you comfort yourself are very important, and you should develop a routine that supports the health of your hair and skin. Focus on keeping your skin clear and glowing. Keep your hair shiny and healthy. Remember that you are your own walking advert.
  5. Avoid common scams. Always research agencies and chat with experienced models for advice. If an agency asks for money upfront, you should stay away. so-called “modeling” schools are also suspect too. There are plenty of scammers out there looking to take advantage of aspiring talent. Be careful.
  6. Educate yourself as much as you can about the industry. Try to learn as much as possible from reading blogs, books, and articles about modeling. Making sure to read quality guides, articles, and books will help you improve important skills (like posing and posture) and better understand how the industry works.
  7. Be bold, not shy. You are your number one salesperson and will have to promote yourself every opportunity you get. Never stand back and be quiet. It will not get you where you are going. Let your personality shine, have a confident attitude, and wow the potential client.
  8. Finally, be prepared for a difficult road. The modeling world is jam-packed with pretty faces, so don’t expect that everything will come to you on a platter of gold. Being good looking does not automatically lead to success as a model, so give it that extra push of perseverance and patience.

I’d like to give a few examples of unusual models, models that don’t fit the cookie cutter type image that comes to mind when the word ‘model’ is mentioned. This is to help you build your confidence, that no matter how different or unusual you look to other people, there is a place for you in modeling if you know where to look, and how to properly package yourself.

  1. Jillian Mercado: Jillian Mercado has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. While working at a fashion magazine, she met the artistic director for the Diesel fashion house, Nicola Formichetti. After she saw a casting call from Diesel asking for young, hip models that represented a variety of cultural backgrounds a few months later, she applied and was chosen to be the face of Diesel in their next campaign along with 22 others. She is now a popular wheelchair model.
  2. Daphne Selfe: At the age of 85, she is Britain’s oldest catwalk model, gracing runways for Dolce & Gabbana, Tata-Naka and Michiko Koshino. She has graceful posture, striking cheekbones and her long, lustrous gray hair.
  3. Alex Minsky: Alex Minsky is a war veteran with a prosthetic leg. Minsky, a Purple Heart recipient, learned to walk with the help of a prosthetic limb after he nearly lost his life in a roadside explosive in Afghanistan. He survived, but lost part of his right leg. While training at the gym one day, he was approached by a guy who asked him if he had ever worked as a model. He is now a successful model, known for his tattooed and ripped body.
  4. Moffy: Moffy is cross-eyed, and this sets her apart from every other female supermodel. The modeling industry is one that typically denies young girls a career in the modeling industry because of certain physical flaws. In Moffy’s case however, her eyes that are not properly aligned with each other, was what helped her gain fame and success in the fashion world. Before her photo shoot for POP Magazine which has now become very famous, she had never even been photographed for a fashion magazine, but her pure, unconventional beauty has now made her very popular.
  5. Mikel Ruffinelli: Mikel Ruffinelli boasts the world’s biggest hips, measuring more than eight feet around. She now models for a website that features big and beautiful women, earning $1,000 per shoot. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and become the superstar model you have always wanted to be. I wish you all the best!
