Model Portfolio Revamp: Key Elements for a Standout Portfolio in 2024

Just like a good résumé is important for a job, a standout modeling portfolio is important for when you’re planning to enter the fashion industry. Similar to a résumé, it shows potential agents and talent scouts what kind of modeling you’ll be good at, so that when they sign you up, they can find the right jobs for you.

The competition is sky-high in modeling (considering New York and Los Angeles are one of their largest markets) and clients have no lack of choices when it comes to deciding their next fresh face. This is exactly why you have to stand out to be noticed!

As 2024 begins, many of you are reflecting on your career and have either chosen to be a model, or are simply doubling down on your current efforts. This is where a standout modeling portfolio comes into play, to help land that coveted gig.

Whether you are a beginner or someone who’s looking for an update, here is my portfolio revamp guide for models which will help you create a standout modeling portfolio:

1. Assess Current Goals

The very first step is to decide what kind of model you want to be, and what you’re suited for—there are lots of options. I strongly advise aspiring models to do their research thoroughly, and stay away from common modeling scams.

The reason why this is so important is because focusing on what type of modeling you’re suited for helps greatly with creating a standout model portfolio that helps you land that casting call quicker.

If you’re looking for a fashion portfolio revamp instead, this is a good time to review your current portfolio and see if it shows what agents like—your modeling type, the diversity and versatility in your shots, a central storyline, and the unique you.

2. Invest in a Professional Photographer

Once you have decided your modeling type, the second step is to invest in a professional photographer. This step is the most important, as a) it shows you’re committed towards your goal, and b) casting agents have so many choices that they prefer a well-done model portfolio to decide whom to cast.

Choosing the right photographer is the difference between getting noticed and getting lost in the competition. As a professional model photographer based in Philadelphia with over two decades of experience and connections in the industry, I am well-versed with what works when it comes to modeling, and what kind of portfolios the agents are looking for. I don’t just take photos, I guide you every step of the way and set up for success—99% of my models get agency representation.

3. Get Ready for the Photoshoot

Once you’ve decided on a photographer, the next step is to get ready for the photoshoot. Spend time understanding and practicing different poses so that you feel confident. Choose some outfits that you feel will complement your frame. You will also need to hire professional HMUAs who will get you ready for the photoshoot.

Professional Hair & Makeup by Vikrant’s team

When you choose Vikrant Photography for your shoots, you don’t need to worry about any of these. I guide my models on what poses would look best for their shoot, and my team of Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe Styling professionals make them look like a million bucks on shoot day, so that they feel and give their best in the shoot.

4. Create a Standout Modeling Portfolio

Once your shoot is done, the next step is to select your photographs, choose a template, and organize the photos in a visually pleasing portfolio. It should show your versatility, cover different styles, angles, and emotions, so that it’s easier to get work when you’re just starting out. Your portfolio should also have a central theme, something that’s unique and tells your story. Make sure the photos you include are all high-quality.

At my fashion photography studio in Philadelphia, models get a detailed consultation with me, where I guide them on selecting winning images to include in their portfolio, that capture their best self while showing how versatile they really are. I also help them select the portfolio layout and get their portfolio books printed.

5. Provide Essential & Contact Information

Just like a good résumé has all the necessary information and contact details, a standout modeling portfolio has all the essential information such as your age, height, body measurements, hair, eye, and skin color, birthmarks, freckles, or tattoos, as well as your contact information to get in touch with you regarding work.

Dean’s Comp Card: (L) Front and (R) Back

Here, I also advise models to get a comp card, which is like a business card for models. I create it for all my modeling clients so that they can showcase their best shots along with their essential & contact information to potential clients and agents. Once the shoot is wrapped and I have delivered the photos, I also give them a list of my industry connections who they can reach out to for getting jobs / open casting calls.

While there are so many things to keep in mind for a fashion portfolio revamp, these are some of the main points to consider for creating a standout modeling portfolio in 2024. Whether you’re looking to start a career as a model or uplevel your existing career, this portfolio revamp guide for models is the best place to start!

And if you’re looking for an experienced, professional model photographer in the Philadelphia / New York / Los Angeles area, let me help you! Book your fashion portfolio shoot today and experience the “Vikrant” difference!

Have queries? Here’s some frequently asked questions:

  • What do agencies look for in a portfolio?

The one major thing that agents want to see is a range of different styles and looks on the model. It shows that they are versatile and can work in different areas.
  • What should a beginner model portfolio look like?

As an aspiring model, your portfolio should include professional photos showing your skills and ability to adapt to situations to give a better idea about you.
  • How long should a model portfolio be?

A good model portfolio should contain at least 20 of your best images (I help my models choose theirs!) so that an agent or client has a good idea of what your capabilities are.
  • How often should you update your modeling portfolio?

This is a question I get asked often! You should update your modeling portfolio at least once a year. This is because we as humans change, and it’s important to show your current self with your best features.
